San Ramon Valley High School Environmental Science Teacher Wins Sustainable Contra Costa Award

Cindy Egan is recognized for individual leadership in sustainability

DANVILLE, CA 10/7/11 – San Ramon Valley High School Environmental Science teacher Cindy Egan won the Sustainable Contra Costa award for an individual dedicated to the environment. The award was presented at the third annual Sustainable Contra Costa (SCOCO) 2011 Leadership in Sustainability Awards Gala on October 7.

The Sustainability Awards go to Contra Costa businesses, organizations, and individuals who have demonstrated outstanding commitment, leadership, and contributions to practicing and promoting sustainability.

Egan has been the Environmental Science teacher at San Ramon Valley High School for the past six years. Her class encourages high school juniors and seniors to learn more about the environment and the careers involved in its management and preservation. The program is activity-based and issues-driven, stressing hands-on learning, data gathering and field-based research, and presentation skills. In addition to working at San Ramon High School, Egan is also a member of the board of directors for Sustainable Danville Area.

The SCOCO Sustainability Awards nominees are evaluated by a team of 16 judges on how well their actions reflect these basic areas of sustainability: Environmental Health, Social Health and Wellbeing, and Economic Prosperity. Nominees are also evaluated on their: scope of involvement and impact in the community; level of organization-wide involvement; uniqueness, being a model for others, and partnerships and collaboration with others.

SCOCOs mission is to inspire, educate, and connect people to create and maintain sustainable communities. It is their vision that local citizens, businesses and governments will live and operate in a way that sustains the health and well being of our society, environment and economy.

San Ramon Valley High School Environmental Club (E2) is part of the Sustainable Schools Alliance, a collaborative effort of community partners to connect parents, students and school staff to share ideas, leverage resources, and learn how to implement sustainable resources.

Sustainable Danville Area is a local community organization inspiring practices that support a healthy quality of life and a strong local economy throughout the Danville community.
